OECD Names Thailand an ASEAN Star, Recognising Its Growing Role in the Global Economy

Traisulee Traisoranakul, Secretary to the Prime Minister, said remarks by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Secretary-General Mathias Cormann underscored international recognition of Thailand’s economic progress and its growing importance to the global economy.

Speaking at the opening of Future-Ready Economy 2026, an official side event of the 2026 IMF–World Bank Group Annual Meetings, Cormann highlighted Thailand’s economic achievements and the broader significance of Southeast Asia at a time when global economic discussions have converged in Bangkok.

“This week, the global economic conversation has converged in Bangkok,” Cormann said, describing Thailand’s return as host of the IMF–World Bank meetings for the first time in 35 years as a testament to the country’s progress and Southeast Asia’s growing weight in the global economy.

Cormann described Thailand as “one of the region’s great success stories,” citing its efforts to open up the economy, drive growth and improve living standards for tens of millions of people.

He also highlighted the potential benefits of Thailand joining the OECD, saying accession would strengthen not only Thailand but also the organisation by bringing in the country’s perspectives and experience. The OECD wants Thailand to have a stronger voice in international forums that shape global standards, positioning the country to contribute more actively to the future of economic cooperation.

Traisulee said the remarks reflected a broader shift in Thailand’s international standing: from hosting major global gatherings and adopting international standards to helping shape them alongside OECD member countries.

The OECD, she added, had expressed its commitment to supporting Thailand throughout this process, as the country seeks to deepen its integration into the global economy and expand its influence in international economic policymaking.
